One of C. S. Lewis' Ten Most Influential Books
by .. Mike Perry (Seattle, WA USA)
In 1962, C. S. Lewis rated this one of the ten books that most influenced him. It is based on a lecture series Arthur J. Balfour (British Prime Minister from 1902-05) gave at the University of Glasgow in 1914.
It's not light reading, but the point it has to make is provocative. Balfour makes a good case that naturalism--the belief that only natural processes exist--has no reason to believe that human reason can be trusted, that our ethics have any meaning, or that our love of beauty has any significance. Humanism, he says, makes sense only if Theism is true.
The good news is that you don't have to hunt for a rare and tattered used version. It should be back in print by the end of June, 2000. A new and greatly enhanced edition is being published by Inkling Books. It should be available through Amazon.com.
Less expensive version
by .. Michael W. Perry (Author of Untangling Tolkien, Seattle, WA)
If you're looking at an edition that costs about $32, you can find this same book in a different publisher's edition for one-third the price. Just do a search for the title "Theism and Humanism."
